Background of the Study
Community radio has proven to be an effective medium for disseminating public health information, particularly in rural and underserved areas. In Numan Local Government Area (LGA), Adamawa State, where access to healthcare services and information is limited, community radio serves as a vital channel for educating the public on health-related issues. Topics such as maternal health, disease prevention, and sanitation are frequently addressed through interactive programs and local language broadcasts. According to Bala and Yusuf (2023), community radio bridges the communication gap between health institutions and the public, fostering awareness and behavioral change. However, the extent of its impact in Numan LGA, a region characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity, requires further investigation. This study explores the role of community radio in disseminating public health information, focusing on its effectiveness and challenges in the area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of community radio in Numan LGA, public health challenges such as poor sanitation, low immunization rates, and maternal health complications persist. Studies by Ahmed and Musa (2024) suggest that while community radio has the potential to address these issues, factors such as inadequate funding, limited reach, and cultural barriers often undermine its effectiveness. In Numan LGA, where traditional beliefs and practices influence health behaviors, the role of community radio in fostering public health awareness is critical yet understudied. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of community radio in disseminating public health information, identifying gaps and recommending strategies for improvement.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of community radio in disseminating public health information in Numan LGA.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by community radio in promoting public health awareness in Numan LGA.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of community radio in public health advocacy.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does community radio disseminate public health information in Numan LGA?

  2. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of community radio in promoting public health awareness in Numan LGA?

  3. What strategies can improve the role of community radio in public health advocacy in Numan LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Community radio significantly contributes to public health awareness in Numan LGA.

  2. Challenges such as limited funding and cultural barriers hinder the effectiveness of community radio in Numan LGA.

  3. Implementing targeted strategies can enhance the role of community radio in public health advocacy.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study highlights the critical role of community radio in addressing public health challenges in Numan LGA. It provides valuable insights for media practitioners, healthcare providers, and policymakers on leveraging community radio for effective health communication. By identifying challenges and proposing solutions, the study aims to enhance the impact of community radio in promoting health literacy and improving health outcomes.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of community radio in disseminating public health information in Numan LGA, Adamawa State. It is limited to assessing the effectiveness, challenges, and opportunities specific to the LGA.
